Clooud ComputingMy work and research interests are in disruptive and innovative technology in education. Specifically, in open educational resources (OER), mobile and distance learning, and using social networks to deliver information. Additional information on my research interest is located in the Vitae and Research areas of this site. Open educational resources (OERs) are “teaching and learning materials that can be freely accessed, reused, modified and shared by anyone” (2011, Stephen Downes). Ideally, attribution is given to the original creators and the OER is published in an open file format that gives everyone the freedom to re-purpose, adapt, and share.

I have designed and taught online classes at Tallahassee Community College as an adjunct instructor since 2004. I am employed at Florida Virtual Campus, a state entity, as the Assistant Director of Instructional Resources and Support. I head up FLVC’s instructional resources, and provides strategic direction and leadership of numerous projects related to virtual teaching, learning, and student services. My areas of expertise include open educational resources, instructional design, distance learning, instructional and information technology, open textbooks, and faculty training.

As a member of the Distance Learning & Student Services division,  I am serving as the project lead on the revision, distribution and analysis of the state-wide faculty and student digital materials, textbooks, and OER surveys. These surveys began with the Open Access Textbook Project. The goal of these surveys is to ascertain their perceptions, utilization, and needs for commercial and open educational resources and etextbooks. In addition, I am also currently project lead for our Course & Degree Catalog Modernization project. This project involves a rebuild of the FVLC distance learning catalog of courses and degree programs for all of Florida’s public colleges and universities. The new features and functions will greatly enhance student services and allow the FLVC to meet its statutorily mandated duties while including options for anticipated future needs of the member institutions and special projects or populations

The Florida Virtual Campus provides access to online student and library support services, and serves as a statewide resource and clearinghouse for technology-based public postsecondary education distance learning courses and degree programs. In my role at FLVC, I support the strategic efforts of the Members Council on Distance Learning and Student Services, which provides advice on the distance learning and academic advising services provided by FLVC. The council has representatives from all of our public colleges and universities.

To laugh often and much
To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children
To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends
To appreciate beauty, to find the best in others
To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition
To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived.
This is to have succeeded.

While this has been widely attributed to Emerson, it is actually a modified version of the one written by Bessie Anderson Stanley in Heart Throbs Volume Two (1911) Edited by Joseph Mitchell Chapple.
